NHS Connecting for Health is responsible for introducing an Electronic Prescription Service to which both the prescriber and dispenser in primary care in England will be connected. pharmaSys is ETP compliant and accredited for use by the NHS
This service will enable electronic prescriptions to be generated, transmitted and received so that pharmacists can dispense against them. Over time, dispensers will also be able to submit these electronic prescriptions to the reimbursement authority in order to claim payment. In most cases, over time, electronic prescriptions will replace paper ones.
The Electronic Prescription Service is part of NHS Connecting for Health's Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions (ETP) programme.
ETP will allow prescriptions generated by GPs to be transferred electronically from their surgeries to pharmacies, improving patient information and saving patients time.
GPs will send prescriptions to the new NHS network spine known as N3 to make them available for dispensing. In line with this, prescribed medication details are added to patients’ electronic records that are held centrally by the NHS Care Records Service (CRS). This allows for efficient management of prescriptions dispensing and reimbursement.
Going forward all pharmacist will be required to obtain the electronic prescription from the spine via the pharmacy’s computer system and N3 connection. This is a simple process when using pharmaSys.
Once the pharmacist has dispensed the medicine or appliance in the usual way, a message will be sent back to the Spine, recording what has been dispensed to the patient.
